This Week Basketball eBook eBADVICE:
Reflections of a 5th-Grade Girls Basketball Coach: Life Lessons from Girls' Hoops by Charlie Duncheon
Reflections of a 5th-Grade Girls Basketball Coach:
Life Lessons from Girls' Hoops
By Charlie Duncheon

Drawing on his background as a competitive Indiana basketball player and an irrepressible love of the game, the author describes experiences in coaching his three daughters grade-school basketball teams in Los Gatos, California.

Coach Charlie unabashedly recounts how he overcomes his Overly Competitive Coaching Disorder (OCCD) to become a better coach and mentor and parent.

Charlie illustrates his learning process with often-hilarious anecdotes of practices, timeouts and motivational speeches. He highlights the importance of positive feedback, recognition and acknowledgement and the challenge of simply getting the girls' attention.

The Assist to a Dunk or to a 3-pointer
Thursday, 22 July 2010

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"... Talking about dunks & stats, I value passing as one of the most important skills in basketball. I was wondering, discussing about the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, about any good passing statistics analysis rules based in my last message about the rebounds qualification in disputed, undisputed, by zones, number of players, etc.

For example, is the same a close assist to a dunk than an assist for an open three pointer ? How we can get an idea of how good our players are at passing the ball which leads to a score ? ..."

Foundations for Successful Basketball
By Morgan Wootten

Morgan Wootten compiled a remarkable 1,274-192 record in his 46-year coaching career at DeMatha High School.

Coach Wootten's teams won five national championships, finished with at least 20 wins in 44 consecutive seasons, and had a number one ranking in the Washington, DC area in 20 of his last 33 years as coach. Coach Wootten retired in 2002 as the winningest, and one of the most respected, coaches ever.

Coach Wootten has sent more than 160 high school players on to play college basketball, and a dozen have played in the NBA. More than 20 of his former assistant coaches or players are now coaching on the high school, collegiate, or professional level. Bottom line - Morgan Wooten knows how to teach the game of basketball.

This DVD series, compiled this year by Championship Productions, is extremely effective at teaching the skills and fundamentals needed to compete at the junior high and high school level. Throughout the DVD series, Coach Wootten uses high school players to perform the drills and demonstrate the plays. This series is ideal for junior high and high school-level coaches!

This 2010 Series Includes:
 • Fundamental Drills and Games
 • Full-Court Offenses
 • Full-Court Defenses
 • Half-Court Offenses
 • Half-Court Defenses

Running a One Man Fast Break
Friday, 09 July 2010

Basketball Statistician's Friday Press Clippings
"... Last season Jason Kidd provided an eloquent demonstration of the value of a guard who is an excellent rebounder. He frequently grabbed defensive rebounds and pushed the ball full bore up court, creating open shots for his teammates.
His ability to be a one man fast break placed tremendous pressure on opposing defenses and played a large part in transforming the New Jersey Nets from a hapless team into the Eastern Conference Champions.

Kidd is one of 11 guards in pro basketball history who averaged at least 6 rpg in five or more seasons (minimum of 60 games played or 350 rebounds each year). ..."

eBA Basketball Video Analysis Case Studies
"... Without any doubt that we have here a traveling violation which is not called, 1 or 12 steps is the same for the rules and the stats... Now, the question is... the defender´s pressure should made this non-called travelling a FORCED
turnover ? ...."

As long as it is not an edited video (as it seems to me...) ... your assumption is correct: the defender' pressure would give us a Forced Turnover in case that violation was called !

Statistics Terminology: Scatter Plot
Monday, 21 June 2010

Basketball Statistician's eBA Encyclopedia
"... A scatter plot is a useful summary of a set of bi variate data (two variables), usually drawn before working out a linear correlation coefficient or fitting a regression line.

It gives a good visual picture of the relationship between the two variables, and aids the interpretation of the correlation coefficient or regression model.

Each unit contributes one point to the scatter plot, on which points are plotted but not joined. The resulting pattern indicates the type and strength of the relationship between the two variables. ....

AA ~ Assist Attempts Registration
Wednesday, 16 June 2010

Basketball Statistician's Forum Articles
"... I think we must have stats that track assists in much the same way we track FGs... What I mean is, for each FGA that is generated by an assist, if it is made it turns out to be a FGM, and we count a made assist or MA.

I propose to keep an analogous category for "assist attempts" or AA, for the cases of a good pass when the FGA misses.

In this situation, we still track the information that there would have been an assist, so the missed FGA does not generate an "assist made" or AM, but it does generate an AA. Thoughts ? ....

Basketball Game Pace and the TO
Sunday, 13 June 2010

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
"... ...there is a connected increase in the number of TO due to pace: as pace increases, players/teams get more TO/Min and TO/G.

Therefore we may suppose the sooner your team shoots the ball, the less probably you have a chance for a TO. Or that time of possession is what's mutually related to TO.

But, while the presumption is that a faster pace means more errors and more ..."
