"... Long shots must be credited with a 25% to the player serving the assist, meanwhile short shots, layups or shots within two meters +/- of the basket, in a relative manner easy shots, must be credited with a 50%.
Finally medium range shots would have the credit of a 63% for the shooter and only the 37% for the player serving the assist, quantification which may be a proper average for assist in general.
On many occasions, field goal percentages and free throw percentages are referred as measures of a player's scoring efficiency....."
University of Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari shows us an extensive workout we can use with our wing players to develop the skills necessary to successfully run the Dribble Drive Motion Offense.
These are the same drills that have produced back-to-back top 5 NBA draft picks and the second highest scoring average in 2009.
Coach Calipari begins with a series of ball handling drills that develop a feel for the basketball.
These drills concentrate on hand/eye coordination and a push-pull technique, which will give your wings a better feel for the ball.
Crossover, between-the-legs and behind the back techniques will build the confidence needed to throw the ball from one hand to another and beat defenders off the ball.

Statistical Analysis is Not a Science
Friday, 05 March 2010
"... The data being used by "stats gurus" is incomplete and often inaccurate. Statistics can be a "powerful tool" to help to understand basketball but they do not provide definitive answers ...
If you are still wasting your time reading the proclamations of "stats gurus," then the next time one of these oracles speaks take note if he mentions a margin of error for his numbers ..."
"... Player with the ball, close defender two handed mildly pushed him and the ball-handler, trying to protect the ball, swings his elbows not in an aggressive way but in a defensive way.
The referee blew the whistle and said no foul but it is a turnover against the ball-handler for "excessive swinging of the elbows".

Roy Williams, head coach of the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team, the Tar Heels, has the highest winning percentage in NCAA history. Over the last seven years, the 58-year-old Asheville, N.C., native—who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007—has won 205 games, including 24 in the NCAA Tournament. That’s more Final Fours, more wins, and more NCAA Tournament victories than any basketball coach in the nation.
Hard Work tells the story of Roy Williams’ life that few people know, in Williams’ own distinct and colorful way—his troubled upbringing, his college years, his years of trying to make ends meet before becoming a head coach. It reveals how determination took him from an impoverished home in the mountains of North Carolina to the very pinnacle of coaching success, culminating in the 2009 NCAA National Championship (his second in five years). And it pulls back the curtain on one of college basketball’s most guarded programs as witnessed by one of the most successful, dominant coaches, at the prime of his power.

Statistics and the Human Element
Friday, 26 February 2010
"... But since so many things are literally intangible, the numbers often let things slip through the cracks.
That’s why experienced professionals using knowledge and game tape can sometimes paint a better picture.
Besides a player’s actions on the court, it’s very important to measure his character and other psychological aspects. As I mentioned earlier, things such as hard work and game intelligence often lead to great success later on.
It would be foolish to think that statistics can somehow measure this type of information. After all, it is the human element. ..."
"... Basketball analysts express statistics in terms of possessions, so they need to make an adjustment for the fact that two free throws do not always constitute a possession. Three-point plays, three-shot fouls, and technicals all increase the number of free throws per possession. Therefore, ......"
"... I’ve tried to figure out which positions are most crucial to a lineup’s (and team’s) success. My method was pretty simple. ...
... I would say the sample sizes are pretty big. An observation I had was the relative lack of quality centers compared to other positions. Perhaps the complaints about there being no good centers nowadays are valid. ..."

"... The foundation of wisdom is to ask intelligent questions and earnestly seek honest answers to those questions, even if those answers go against what you are inclined to believe. Most of what you read and hear about the NBA is devoid of wisdom because most writers/talking heads are too ignorant, biased and/or indifferent to pursue wisdom.
Here are some NBA questions and answers worth pondering: ..."
"... If a foul is committed on the shot, ( made or missed ) does the shot attempt get averaged into your field goal percentage ?
... what is the rule and the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ?
"... Decision-making play a very important role in basketball. While the game is taking place, players are constantly choosing what to do.
In order to carry out this research work, two questions have been formulated:
1) how do high level female basketball players make a decision while they are competing? 2) which key components do they use to make the best decisions? ..."
The media has speculated and sports fans have debated, but until now no one has known the real story. Personal Foul takes an in-depth look at former NBA referee Tim Donaghy and the betting scandal that rocked professional basketball.
Containing never-before-seen documentation and correspondence between the league office, referees, coaches, players and owners, this is the decisive book that reveals exactly what was done and how it all happened. Which games were affected and how? Is it true that referees targeted particular players? Just how much did the NBA know and when? How did the mafia get involved?
Personal Foul answers all of these questions and more. Thrilling and poignant, Personal Foul takes the reader on the journey of one man wrestling his own demons and shines a light on a culture of gambling and "directive" officiating in the NBA that promises to change the way sports fans view the game forever.

"... The study of the results makes clear that the coach that was analyzed disproportionately works on offense in detriment to defensive work. The coaching situations in which the aspects of offense are developed are mostly without opposition, while in the case of defense, it was more common to face opposition.

"... before a single free throw is attempted, A1 enters the game. The free throw is missed, and:
1.- the ball bounces out of bounds untouched and the clock never starts, or
2.- the ball is touched, the clock runs for three seconds, and the ball is knocked out of bounds before anyone gains control. A1 is substituted and leaves the game.

"... So, let's look at basketball. Perhaps because the only thing "revolutionary" stated by stats-gurus in regards to strategy has been "Mid-range shots are for suckers," and that wasn't particularly revolutionary, basketball stats have faced less resistance.
Or maybe it's because of the sort of people who own basketball teams compared to baseball teams (I think it's less of an "old boys" club). Really, all that people like Morey, Pelton, Pritchard, Presti, etc. have said is:
1. Efficiency is the right way to evaluate team defense and offense.
2. Defense matters a lot more than most people think it does.
That's it, basically. What's so revolutionary about that? ..."
