Jim Calhoun: Defensive Philosophy and Zone Offense Principles with Jim Calhoun
University of Connecticut Hall of Fame Head Coach Jim Calhoun has established himself as perhaps the greatest program builder in college basketball history.
Having completed his 25th season as head coach at UConn and his 39th year as a collegiate head coach in 2010-11, Jim Calhoun has now achieved acclaim as one of college basketball's
legendary leaders, leading the Huskies to the 2011 NCAA National Championship and becoming only the fifth coach in NCAA history to win three national titles.
He also reached several other milestones in the notable 2010-11 campaign-- the 300th BIG EAST win of his career, his 600th win at UConn and his seventh BIG EAST Tournament title, more

The father, the son and the sweet 16: A basketball college disaster |

...a New Tuesday ...a New Basketball eBook eBA DVICE !
 |
The Father...The Son... and the Sweet Sixteen: A College's Basketball Disaster by Paul Wieland
There has never been a college sports scandal quite like the one at tiny St. Bonaventure University. The school's president was caught fixing grades on a basketball player after
admitting him with only a welding certificate from a junior college.
The university had once been a national power in college basketball, and a president with grand ideas for a return to the top corrupted his school's academics to reach
that aim. |
He also made sure his son was an assistant basketball coach.
In the end, the school's athletic director was the only hero, and the chairman of the university board of trustees committed suicide with his note saying he had "failed St.
Bonaventure. " The Father…the Son…and the Sweet Sixteeen " is an inside look at the scandal and how it happened, and a cautionary tale about the venality of big time
college athletics.

A New Saturday... A new Basketball DVD eBA DVICE...

Rick Barry's Fundamentals for Becoming a Great Shooter with Rick Barry
Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring. His name appears near the top of every all-time offensive list.
He scored more than 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more than 30 points.
He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams,
and five All-ABA First Teams. Barry was a nearly unstoppable offensive juggernaut, a passionate competitor with an untempered desire to win.
Occasionally his fiery competitiveness would grate on rivals -- and teammates, too.

Black Planet: Facing Race during an NBA Season by David Shields
"... During the 1994-1995 NBA season, I attended nearly all of the Seattle SuperSonics' home games; watched on TV nearly all their away games; listened to countless pre- and post-game
interviews and call-in shows on the radio; talked to or tried to talk to players, coaches, agents, journalists, fans, my wife; corresponded with members of the Sonics newsgroup
on the Internet; read articles and articles and articles. |
Although I'm a passionate basketball fan and Sonics fan, when I was writing the book I wasn't interested in the game per
se—who won, who lost, the minutiae of strategy. I was interested in how the game gets talked about. By the end of the season I'd accumulated hundreds of pages of often utterly
illegible notes, the roughest of rough drafts. Over the last three years I transformed those notes into this book—a daily diary which runs the length of one team's long-forgotten
season and which is now focused, to the point of obsession, on how white people (including especially myself) think about and talk about black heroes, black scapegoats,
black bodies.
What John Edgar Wideman calls "our country's love/hate affair with the black body" ...

Michael Jordan: The Final Conquest by Michael Essany |

Michael Jordan: The Final Conquest by Michael Essany
I have to tip my hat to this one. Totally unbiased, fact-based presentation of many things I had no clue about - like Michael's comments, feelings about returning to basketball,
and the posturing he has taken in the NBA since recently returning as a ball-club owner.
The insight provided into Jordan's new life, engagement, and family-man status was really |
enjoyable and motivational.
Don't be like Mike... Mike ! Michael Jordan should probably not be like Mike anymore. Yes, he's the greatest of all time, but there comes a point when you have to move
on regardless of what you can still offer or teach. I side with those who say MJ should stay retired.
But it's a good debate and I could see where Jordan's recent words and actions
could be construed as evidence of a man who wants to return to the NBA. I just dont picture it happening again.
I don't know what Michael Jordan will do when he turns 50, but I have to believe he won't go quietly into old age as the author seems to agree...!

A New Saturday... A new Basketball DVD eBA DVICE...
Mike Dunlap's
1-1-3 Man Zone Defense
with Mike Dunlap
Mike Dunlap is renowned in basketball coaching circles for his D2 Championships, his NBA experience and his work in the Big East, Pac 12 and international leagues.
Dunlap is also known as a master tactician. His practices are focused so much on footwork and fundamentals that his players would often go hour-long stretches without
touching a ball.
He counts John Wooden and Pete Newell as friends and mentors.
Coach Dunlap offers thought-provoking ideas that will pique your curiosity, challenge your conventional thinking, and spark your intellect. Not a lecture, not a clinic, not a
conversation, this is a unique resource that draws upon successful sources as varied as John Wooden, Jim Collins, Malcolm Gladwell and dozens of others, to create a 'must have'
addition to your basketball books and DVDs library !

Friday, 06 January 2012 |

"... With the exception of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas by the other statistical systems ? ... "
There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent.
This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable. ...

The Last Great Game: Duke vs. Kentucky by Gene Wojciechowski |

 |
The Last Great Game: Duke vs. Kentucky and the 2.1 Seconds That Changed Basketball by Gene Wojciechowski
The 1992 NCAA East Regional final between Duke University and the University of Kentucky is considered one of the best basketball games of all time, one that ended with the
improbable. With just over two seconds left in overtime, Grant Hill threw a perfect 80-foot inbounds pass to Christian Laettner, who made the game-winning basket over two
defenders as time expired. |
As compelling as this historic game was, so were the backgrounds of the teams involved. Kentucky was thought to be years away from a Final Four berth, but head coach Rick
Pitino and his punishing game plan resurrected a scandal-plagued program. Duke, coming off a national championship, was a perennial powerhouse whose driven players were
convinced another title was theirs.
Wojciechowski, a senior reporter for ESPN.com, traces the two teams’ path to each other and the game’s impact on its participants, but little space is devoted to the hypothesis
promised in the title. We never learn how this legendary tilt influenced college basketball or why it’s the defining game in an intensely popular sport.
Though fans of both colleges will lap up the locker room tales and glory day remembrances, Wojciechowski’s effort reads too much like a prodigiously reported magazine article.

Wilt Chamberlain: The Numbers Don't Lie By David Friedman |
|
|
|
|
Friday, 30 December 2011 |

"... Many of the things asserted by basketball "stat gurus" offend my ears (and mind) more than the sound of long fingernails scraping a chalkboard but one piece of nonsense that particularly bothers me is when a "stat guru" attempts to "normalize" one player's numbers to supposedly determine how that player would have performed in a different era. For instance, a popular "stat guru" declaration is that Michael Jordan's 37.1 ppg average in the 1986-87 season--when "adjusted" for pace--is actually superior to Wilt Chamberlain's record-shattering 50.4 ppg average in the 1961-62 season.
There are many problems with this deceptively simple comparison ..."

The Classic: How Everett Case and His Tournament Brought Big-Time Basketball to the South by Bethany Bradsher
The Classic tells the story of the rise of college basketball along Tobacco Road, but also chronicles the scandal that led to the tournament's demise.
North Carolina State head coach Everett Case originated the idea of the Classic. His assistant, Carl "Butter" Anderson provided the name.
The tournament was

The tournament came to an end after a point-shaving scandal in 1961 involving players from both North Carolina State and North Carolina.
So, from exciting basketball action to the scandalous revelations of point-shaving which brought the tournament to a sudden end, The Classic tells the untold story of a tournament that
helped transform a state and brought big-time basketball to the South.
