I received a definition about LINEAR WEIGHTS : is the name
given to methods whose purpose it is to estimate points produced and that do it by adding
a player or team's positive factors and subtracting a player or team's negative factors,
with appropriate weights added to each of the factor.....
May someone explain the applicability and the formula of this method ?
Thanks in advance....

There are several different types of linear weights out
there, some of which have names. TENDEX is the most common name, though the formula
associated with this name depends on who is using it: see Formulas Revision in
the Formulas section of
our site.
Basically linear weights claims to obtain points or a mark from a formula (see our TENDEX
at: eBA System ).
The result is scaled by a factor that accounts for whether the team or player played at
faster or slower pace than normal, by a simple example.

There is some valid debate in baseball over whether linear
weights are appropriate for that game. I am unsure
about if they are not appropriate in Basketball too..., only if we take as an approximate
value !

Basically linear weights claims to obtain points or
something like points as a mark from a formula that looks like this:
Pts. Created= a*PTS + b-*AST + c*OR + d*DR + e*STL + f*BLK - g*TO - h*(FGA-FGM) -
i*(FTA-FTM) - j*PF - k*FF - l*DQ
In some versions of this formula, the result is scaled by a factor that accounts for
whether the team (or player's team, if it's applied to a player) played at a faster or
slower pace than normal. Generally is assigned the value of 1 to each of the weights, a'
through i', and 0 to the others.
