A team that consistently receives a lot of scoring from it's bench is able to substitute more freely, hence all the players are fresher at game's end. Also the impact of a starter fouling out is less.

The Bench Scoring Stat are more relevant at the college  level. Most players who goes on to the NBA may scores 20 points a game  at least once a season. Nevertheless, many a winning college team gets exposed in the NCAA for its lack of depth at their bench.
