Statistician's Digest: "Correctable Referee's Error Rule" & Statistics

"... Game under FIBA rules: Team A is on team fouls and the marker is up at the control table showing it. Player A1 commits the 5th. A team foul but instead of awarding the free throws to Team B, one of the officials gave possession to Team B who scored a basket. The referees on the table buzzed and points out the error of the missed free throws. May the officials give the basket as good and award the "forgotten" free-throws, because it is a "correctable official error" ? Which is the correct rule and, specially, the statistical register of this play ? ..."

In the year 2000 FIBA modified the Correctable Error rule, so that in this situation if a basket was scored, you can't award also the free throws: it would be penalizing the offending team twice.

Till the 1999 FIBA basketball season the official would have been correct in giving the basket as good and award the "forgotten" free-throws ( and actually also at the NCAA as they has not yet adopted this amendment ) .
But after the modification, meanwhile the error of the official is still within the correctable error time structure, the new rule (58.3.3) means that the missed free throws should have been ignored and the ball should have been awarded to Team B on the baseline ( with the possibility of running the baseline as after any successful basket ).

Statistician's Digest: The Points Saved Concept

Points Saved is a new stat introduced by John Hollinger to measure individual defense and here is his description form his book Pro Basketball Forecast (Pro Basketball Prospectus):

"The idea is to take the minutes a player played in each game, multiply it by the team's points allowed in that game, and compare it to how many points the team actually gave up with the player on the court. From that, we determine his defensive value by the difference between "expected points" and the actual points -- something I call "points saved".

The formula is as follows:

Points Saved = ((MIN/tmMIN) * oppPTS) - oncourtoppPTS

where oppPTS is the opponents points scored in games in which the player played, and oncourtoppPTS is the opponents points scored while the player was on the court.

Statistician's Digest: Bad Dribble - It's Turnover but Steal ?

"... A1 is dribbling when he deal with the ball inefficiently and
it bounces toward B2, how we register this play ? Steal from B2 ....? but he was not the " the initiator of the action causing the turnover".... ! ..."

Register Fundamental= To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator
of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. For NCCA and FIBA the steal should be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just a forced error. For us, according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, the "forced error" concept is different at all. See: eBA ONLINE.

eBA Statistical Register= A1 is charged with a turnover, and meanwhile NCAA & FIBA do not credit B2 with a steal as he did not initiate the action, I suggest the following:
analyze the action by means the game video-tape and credit B2 with a steal if there was although a minimal action of the player as the cause of the turnover, on the contrary a "team steal" will be registered.

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Spencer Haywood

Spencer Haywood (born April 22, 1949, in Silver City, Mississippi) is a retired American professional basketball player.

In 1970, after forcing his way into the NBA through legal action (in a case, Haywood v. National Basketball Assn., that went all the way to the US Supreme Court), Haywood joined the Seattle SuperSonics. Haywood's court victory was bittersweet, however. During his first season with Seattle, Haywood was booed at several NBA arenas. At one arena, the public-address announcer even went so far as to announce "Ladies and gentlemen, we have an illegal player on the court (referring to Haywood)," during pre-game introductions.

Haywood was named to the All-NBA First Team in 1972 and 1973 and the All-NBA Second Team in 1974 and 1975. Haywood's 29.2 points per game in the 1972-73 season and 13.4 rebounds per game in 1973-74 are still the single-season record averages for the SuperSonics for these categories. Haywood played in four NBA All-Star Games while with Seattle, including a strong 23 point 11 rebound performance in 1974. In the 1974-75 season, he helped lead the SuperSonics to their first playoff berth. Overall, during his five seasons with Seattle, Haywood averaged 24.9 points per game and 12.1 rebounds per game.

In 1975, the Supersonics traded him to the New York Knicks where he teamed with Bob McAdoo. Haywood later played for the New Orleans Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, and Washington Bullets. He earned a championship ring with the Lakers in the 1979-80 season, but didn't play any of their post-season games due to a suspension for illegal drug use. He was previously married to Somali supermodel Iman.

Haywood's #24 jersey was retired by the SuperSonics during a halftime ceremony on February 26, 2007.
