31/01/07 - They Call Me Coach They Call Me Coach
By: John Wooden
The critically acclaimed, classic autobiography of UCLA Basketball's legendary coach "What Knute Rockne was to football, Connie Mack to baseball, and Wilbur and Orville Wright to flying, John Wooden is to Basketball." -- Los Angeles Times " They Call Me Coach is grassroots Americana, a story bigger than Basketball. One of those rare sports books that is must reading for everyone." -- Chicago Tribune Now featuring a great new look and a Foreword by hoop Hall of Famer Bill Walton, this classic bestselling sports bio by America's "winner coach" is back. Still charming fans everywhere, college Basketball legend John Wooden reflects on his record-breaking career, his inspired life behind the scenes, and how his top players went on to shape and change the NBA. With worldly wisdom, Wooden offers a very personal history of an unforgettable time in college Basketball, answering the most-asked questions about his life, his career, and the players who made his team unbeatable.....

28/01/07: Due to the growth in the number of registered members in eBA Stats.com and daily visitors to the site and the clinics, we are experiencing some technical difficulties with our file hosting server. They affect the uptime availability and response time of our site...

Basketball Time Out
Photograph: Steve Cannon at orlandosentinel.com

so, it is the right moment for a time out and a player change...

For the next days, we'll be working on moving all this site to our new server: with higher processing power and more space for each one of our four ( 4 ! ) sites ( see below ).

We are also doing some more integration work between our old files and our new editors and the new server.

In concordance with our success in the eBA ONLINE Courses & Clinics during 2006, we are programming and developing new contents for the current academic year 2007.

Therefore, we are working hard also to keep this site operating during these weeks:

Please, stand by ! We'll return in a few days back to full speed with four new independently located sites: eBA-Stats ~ eBA-Clinic ~ eBA-Forum and eBA-Word... Thank You !

The new Basketball Statistics Register Course in eBA ONLINE, begin on Monday 5, March 2007 - 21:00 GMT:
there are no more available vacancies !

 PLUS MINUS RATING

eBA ONLINE

19/01/07: "This statistical method measure how point differentials change when a particular player is in game versus when he is not, evaluating how the team is performing in both situations.

+ / - Rating = On court Points - Off court Points

On Court Points=
Team's net points ( Points scored by team - Points scored by opponent ) with the particular player on the floor.

Off Court Points=
Team's net points ( Points scored by team - Points scored by opponent ) with the particular player off the floor.

Analyzing Plus / Minus Data

* Logic of this method is straightforward: teams should perform better when their good players are playing versus when they are not.

* The pure "unadjusted" plus / minus rating do not measure the value of the player per se; they measure the value of the player relative to the players that substitute in for him.

* There are differences in the quality of players that players play with and against.

* A weak starter on a team with exceptionally good starters ( relative to bench players ) will generally get a very good unadjusted plus / minus rating - regardless of his actual contribution to the team.

* Star players play a lot of minutes per game and will generally have a plus / minus rating that mirror the team's number as a whole.

* When the team gets beaten by a solid margin, the team as a whole will probably have very few players with a positive rating.

* A situation when a player have a NEGATIVE rating ON court and a POSITIVE while on bench, MUST NOT be lightly analyzed as this player should have been played MORE minutes.

* Players on poor teams have a hard time getting good plus numbers, due to the fact that their teams are usually behind.

* We must use the plus / minus statistical formula as just ANOTHER of many tools available at eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System that will help the coach to evaluate the team, not as a exclusive one.

* A good aspect of tracking plus/minus rating is that the players will be aware that the coach is grading the team's performance for every second a particular player is on the floor.

* Also gives role players or player's who aren't necessarily big scorers or into compiling big personal statistics, another way to evaluate and feel good about what he is doing on the court.

The research on the Plus Minus Rating is being studied in the eBA Basketball Analysis Clinic, which next 'Basketball Statistics Register Course' begins on Monday 5, March 2007 ( no more vacancies available )......"

31/12/2006: Leading with the Heart Leading with the Heart
By Mike Krzyzewski - Coach K
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke Basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside Basketball.
What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great Basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quinn Snyder are probably going to become great Basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach....
