After thrilling fans all over the continent with his skill and daring throughout the most competitive season in the history of European basketball, Sergio Llull of Real Madrid was rewarded on Saturday for his virtuoso accomplishments by being named the MVP of the 2016-17 EuroLeague. Llull learned of the MVP honor at the end of the Euroleague Awards Ceremony to highlight a gala evening at the opulent Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, on the next-to-last night of the 2017 Final Four. The trophy for the top performer of the season was presented to Llull by new Euroleague Basketball Legend Mirsad Turkcan.

Llull's fellow members of the previously announced All-EuroLeague First Team – Bogdan Bogdanovic and Ekpe Udoh of Fenerbahce Istanbul, Georgios Printezis of Olympiacos Piraeus, and last season's MVP, Nando De Colo of CSKA Moscow – were also honored at the event. So was the 2016-17 All-EuroLeague Second Team – Brad Wanamaker of Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul, Milos Teodosic of CSKA, Nicolo Melli of Brose Bamberg, Gustavo Ayon of Real Madrid and Bryant Dunston of Anadolu Efes Istanbul – as were the winners of the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy, Keith Langford of Unics Kazan; the Rising Star Trophy, Luka Doncic of Real Madrid; and the Best Defender Trophy, Adam Hanga of Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, who was unable to attend due to his professional commitments.

Llull received more votes than any other player during the MVP selection process, which was open to both fans and media. In his 10th season with Madrid, Llull posted career-best EuroLeague averages with 16.4 points, 5.9 assists, 2.2 three-pointers made and 16.8 performance index rating over 32 games while leading his team to the Final Four. His unbelievable knack for hitting buzzer-beaters from all distances and angles made him as dangerous and decisive as any player in the league, while his non-stop commitment at both ends of the court went a long way to assuring Madrid the best record, 23-7, in the longest regular season in competition history.

Llull, a EuroLeague champion with Madrid in 2015, will play in Sunday's third-place game at the Final Four after his 28 points in a loss Friday to Fenerbahce Istanbul matched the most in a semifinal at the event this century.

At 29 years old, Llull is the undisputed leader of Madrid and the motor of its offense. He ranked third in the EuroLeague this season in assists, fifth in scoring and eighth in performance index rating. When the stakes were raised, the Madrid playmaker boosted his number to 18.5 points and a 17.8 index rating in four playoff games against Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul. Llull started in every game this season and led Madrid in minutes played (27:44 per game) and a total of 70 three-point shots made, another personal best and the fourth-most in the competition. Llull was named MVP of November, a month during which he averaged 21.4 points per game. He also earned MVP honors for Rounds 7 and 27. Llull made his debut on the All-EuroLeague First Team after having previously been voted to the second team in 2010.

Llull started the competition on fire, scoring 22 points against Olympiacos and getting a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists in a road win against Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv. Soon after that, Llull broke his personal EuroLeague scoring record by dropping 30 points in a narrow home win against Panathinaikos Athens. Llull continued leading Madrid, scoring 20 points in a road triumph against FC Barcelona Lassa and hitting three consecutive bombs from way downtown to help Madrid down CSKA Moscow 95-85, a win that would eventually allow Madrid to finish first at the end of the regular season. Not only did he have 26 points in an 89-91 road win against Brose Bamberg, but Llull hit an unbelievable game-winning floater to win that game. Fans had come to expect such heroics from Llull, though. Several of his many three-pointers during were made with the shot clock or game clock about to expire, each one seemingly more impossible than the last – but they all fell through the net to the amazement of the crowds.

"First of all I have to say that it is an honor for me to receive this award," Llull said on the stage immediately after accepting the trophy. "I want to congratulate all players here tonight. I think they all could have won it. I also want to thank the fans and media for voting for me. Last but not least, I want to thank my teammates and coaches who work with me all year, because without them it would have been impossible to win this award. Thank you."

Llull becomes the 12th different player to win the MVP award since the current end-of-season awards format was introduced in 2005. He is the third Spanish-born MVP, after Juan Carlos Navarro collected the award in 2009 and Llull's former teammate Sergio Rodriguez won it with Madrid in 2014. Llull started his career in La Salle in his hometown Mahon and played for Basquet Manresa before joining Real Madrid in 2007. In addition to his EuroLeague title in 2015, Llull has helped Madrid win four Spanish League and five Copa del Rey titles, in addition to the Intercontinental Cup title in 2015. Llull has also been very successful with the Spanish national team with which he has won three EuroBasket gold medals and one bronze, as well as two Olympic medals, silver in 2012 and bronze in 2016. He celebrated 10 years since signing with Madrid a few days ago and now Llull can mark the anniversary as the season's most valuable player, adding his name to the EuroLeague history books in golden letters!

Who gets really the credit for the steal ?
¿Quién obtiene el crédito por el robo?

ABOUT THE BASKETBALL STEAL

Statistician's Digest:
Who gets really the credit for the steal ?

When we have really a steal ? Which are the guidelines ?

For example:
Player A1 from Team A bats the ball away from a player on the Team B, but finally A2 from the Team A gets possession of the ball. Who gets the credit for the steal ? A1 or A2 ?

We are just studying this statistical category in the eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Clinic: the steals. Just to begin the discussion, some definitions:

In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player. A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.

This a classical definition. The eBA conception is given in the Basketball Statistics Analysis Course and will be applied in the answer. And now, we are prepared for this question, A1 or A2 ? ...

Spouse: Karen West (m. 1978), Martha Jane Kane (m. 1960–1976)

Jerry West in Wikipedia

Jerry Alan West (born May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia) is a retired American basketball player who played his entire professional career for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. West has also had a successful career as a coach and as an executive. He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980, and his left-handed dribbling silhouette has long been used in the National Basketball Association's official logo.

West was a standout in high school and at college, attending West Virginia University and leading it to the 1959 NCAA championship game (of which he was named Most Valuable Player) before embarking on a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also played for, and co-captained with Oscar Robertson, the 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medal team in Rome.

His nicknames included "Mr. Clutch," for his skill and ability to make a shot in a clutch situation, and "Zeke from Cabin Creek," given to him by teammate Elgin Baylor, and one West was not particularly fond of. The latter name is somewhat of a misnomer, but not completely; Cabin Creek is the name of both a stream and a community near West's hometown of Chelyan. The community of Cabin Creek is on the opposite side of the stream from Chelyan as it enters the Kanawha River.

West's son, Jonnie, is currently a redshirted-freshman for the West Virginia Mountaineers basketball squad (2007 - 2008 season).

Ball between Rim & Backboard
Balón Retenido entre Aro y Tableroo

ABOUT BALL BETWEEN RIM & BACKBOARD
STATISTICS & RULE

Basketball Coach's Digest:
Ball between Rim & Backboard ~ Statistics & Rule

When the ball becomes lodged between the rim and the backboard the proper rule is a Jump Ball situation.

NBA & FIBA= Jump Ball at the top of the key between any two opponents.

NCAA & High School U.S.= Jump Ball which would lead to an alternating possession situation.

eBA Statistical Tracking=
Jump-ball: as at any situation of Jump Ball, if the same possession goes on, no registration. If the possession goes over the other team, a team turnover and a steal at Jump Ball will be registered for the respective teams.

Alternating Possession Situation: if the arrow points the team at defense, we register a missed shot for the throwing player and team rebound for the defender team. If the arrow points the offensive team, the play goes on without stats reference at all.

Ball Lodged at end of period= As time is running out in the quarter, a shooter attempts a try for a field goal. Time expires and the horn sounds while the shot is in the air. The ball lodges between the rim and the backboard.

Rule 5 clearly states that a period ends when the horn sounds indicating that time has expired, except if a ball is in flight during a try or a tap. The period ended when the try was unsuccessful or when the ball lodged between the ring and the backboard. The kicker in this situation is that no penalty or part of a penalty may be carried over to another period, or extra period. So you just start the next period with the alternating possession procedure, or if it's and extra period, a jump ball. NFHS 5-6-1, 5-6-3

NFHS 5-6-1, 5-6-3

Free Throw Shooting Influence
Influencia del Lanzamiento de Tiros Libres

THE FREE THROW SHOOTING INFLUENCE ON END RESULT

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Free Throw Shooting Influence on End Result

"... In what manner free throw shooting have an influence on the end result of games ? ..."

Let's take to be true, for example, that both teams had converted all of their free throws, or the losing team convert all of its free throws and the winning team convert the same number of free throws.

How all these data is performed statistically to the end ?

Here are some numbers from the archives of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System:

1.- The average number of free throws attempted in a game is about 25 per game.

2.- The shooting average is about 75% efficiency.

3.- That implies as a possibility that a 1% upward would make an actual deviation in FTM once every 4 games (see 1.-: teams shoot 25 FTA per game), translated in only one point every four games.

4.- Teams win by one point 5% of the total of games played. 5.- That 1% upward in FT% would tell us that 25% of these 1-point wins would instead go to overtime.

6.- And finally, to go on with discussion, that 1% FT% upward give us a win on 5% * 25% * 50% = 0.6% of the team's games, or 0.5 current games: that's means one additional win every two seasons.

How all these data is performed statistically to the end ?

What about the free throws analysis and the weighted standard deviation ?
Performing this calculation we must not mistake precision with accuracy. Nonparametric elements like percentiles make no hypothesis that is taken for granted about the shape of the distribution: they are more cautious measures and much less likely to return errors at the the highest degrees.

If you're searching leaders in a category, basketball free throws for example, I recommend you to always use nonparametric measures with a common plan with parametric measure, merely to be sure there are no outliers into your results.

The weighted standard deviation doesn't succeed in seizing the unfairness between two players with the same rates at free throws percentage ( as in all the other categories ) in different quantities of playing time.

Same rate is as if: that rate and no more. What it would succeed in catching is a significant change between the width of the distributions, having an effect upon the standard scores. The differences between player rates would be involved, but not if they have the same rate.

When analyzing free throws numbers ( or any other range ) with measures that aren't well fully apprehended, I give preference to study at the numbers from multiple angles. In this case which you propose at your question, I would perform the computations using

1. Percentiles
2. Standard deviation
3. Weighted Standard deviation by minutes
4. Weighted Standard deviation by square root (minutes per game)

and examine and note the similarities or differences of them. There shouldn't be much significant change, but it would be holding the attention if there was.

Basketball 'Defensive 3-second stat' Rule
La Regla de los '3-segundos defensivos'

THE BASKETBALL 'DEFENSIVE 3-SECOND STAT' RULE

"... How do you classify the 'defensive 3-second' statistics ? As a violation, a foul or an illegal defense foul ? How to register this stat ? ..."

First of all, let's define the 'defensive 3-second rule' applied in the NBA, not in FIBA:

a. The count starts when the offensive team is in control of the ball in the front-court.
b. Any defensive player, who is positioned in the 16-foot lane or the area extending 4 feet past the lane endline, must be actively guarding an opponent within three seconds. Actively guarding means being within arms length of an offensive player and in a guarding position.
c. Any defensive player may play any offensive player. The defenders may double-team any player.
d. The defensive three-second count is suspended when:

(1) there is a field goal attempt,
(2) there is a loss of team control,
(3) the defender is actively guarding an opponent or
(4) the defender completely clears the 16-foot lane.

e. If the defender is guarding the player with the ball, he may be located in the 16-foot lane. This defender is not required to be in an actively guarding/arms distance position. If another defender actively guards the player with the ball, the original defender must actively guard an opponent or exit the 16-foot lane. Once the offensive player passes the ball, the defender must actively guard an opponent or exit the 16-foot lane.

PENALTY: A technical foul shall be assessed. The offensive team retains possession at the free throw line extended. The shot clock shall remain the same as when play was interrupted or reset to 14 seconds, whichever is greater.

And now, to your question.
Let me give you a general summary of how the defensive 3 second violation works:
Before NBA allows zone defenses, if a player was found 'camping' in the paint, while the opponent he was supposed to guard was at the 3 point line, there would be an illegal defense call. And technical shots would follow.

The rules have changed, now NBA teams are allowed to run the zone defenses. This is the instance that does not conform to a generalization, when your defense sets up, and you standing in the key, a player will not get the call if he is directly guarding the opponent, like post-up. But if that player camp in the paint for more than 3 seconds before his opponent tries to score on him, the technical is registered as a team foul, followed by a free-throw and possession.
Its like a offensive 3 in the key, but in this case the defensive player has to be on the inside an arms length while his opponent is in the key. The result that is desired in this rule is to avoid from a big man on defense 'to camp' under the basket and blow every layup.
Refs only call it when the game is not still clearly defined. If is a tied close game in the fourth, no official is going to call this...

This situation is from a Rockets-Magic game. Dwight Howard has the ball in a similar spot, yet must deal with Arron Afflalo digging down from the top of the key, Jameer Nelson lingering in the lane instead of staying with Patrick Beverley and a third defender (he's hidden) in the paint thanks to Terrence Jones. Howard does well to get a layup opportunity, but misses it amid all the arms in the paint. (continue reading the article at SB Nation)

LA REGLA DE LOS '3-SEGUNDOS DEFENSIVOS' EN BALONCESTO
