"... The basic principle in many of the basketball stat formulas is how efficiently players use possessions.
The object is to get players who take better shots, commit few turnovers and grab the highest possible percentage of rebounds. It's not just looking at players who score and rebound the most, but who do so with the fewest chances.
The more efficient offensive and defensive possessions a team has, the more points it will score and the fewer it will give up.

"... In basketball, a block (short for blocked shot) occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a shot from an offensive player.
The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward. If it is heading downward when the defender hits it, it is ruled a goaltending and counts as a made basket.
A goaltending is also called if the block is made after the ball bounces on the backboard. ..."

The 09’–10’ NCAA college basketball season marks the 100th anniversary of North Carolina basketball. The Tar Heels have earned top-five rankings in preseason polls four of the last five years, twice at #1. But they weren’t always seen as a power - house team. Their strength has been decades in the making.
Light Blue Reign documents the building of a program, a behindthe- scenes, far-reaching, wide-angle perspective on one of the most formidable college basketball teams in the country. Art Chansky, a sportswriter who has covered basketball on Tobacco Road for more than 30 years, uses first-hand accounts from interviews with people who were present during the fifty-year dynasty to construct an intimate, detailed narrative of what it was like to play and work for the three Hall of Fame coaches who defined this era of success.

"... Greece have won the Acropolis Tournament in Athens by edging out Serbia 74-73 but it came in controversial fashion as the final was abandoned following a huge brawl.
Serbia were doomed to only the second defeat of their preparations for the FIBA World Championship when a scuffle between Antonis Fotsis and Milos Teodosic turned into a major incident involving almost every player from both teams.
Both teams were sent from the court before the referees decided not to resume the game, handing Greece victory as they had led when the fight began, with two and half minutes still on the clock.
Passions had been running high through the game, and shortly before the fight began, Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic had been charged with a second technical foul and ejected, an incident Greece used to come back and take the lead. ..."
"... Both teams and coaches were aware of the timeout situation. One team had zero and the other team one timeout left. Team with zero timeouts had ball and got trapped at mid-court and started screaming and showing timeout.
This occurred in front of the referee and the opponents coach. The referee knew the asking coach had no timeouts but he requested one and the referee granted him one.

This motion offense uses four perimeter players and one post player, and is a good offense to use when your team has good outside players and only a few post players.
Generally, we like to run the 4-out motion offense against man-to-man defenses.
However, you can use the 4-out, 1-in set as a zone offense, although the rules are different.
The now popular "dribble-drive motion offense" uses a 4-out set and very little screening.
You can also use the 4-out offense to post up any of your players inside, if you feel there is a defensive mismatch. For example, if a defensive player has four fouls, have your player that he is guarding set up as the inside post player...

"... I can chart plays and write descriptive game recaps that deeply analyze how basketball players and teams really function but no matter how proficiently I do those things I will never convince a diehard "stat guru" that in order to accurately make an individual player rating one must somehow give credit to a player who draws a double team and thus blesses his teammate with a wide open shot or an opportunity to get an uncontested putback.
I am not sure if this is because "stat gurus" are morons or because they have a strong economic incentive to insist that they alone know how to properly evaluate basketball players (though one could argue that both things may be correct in the sense that it is moronic to place a higher value on making money than searching for truth). ..."
FIBA's online basketball survey www.whybasketball.net will be sending two lucky basketball fans to Turkey to attend two FIBA World Championship games.
The 'Why Basketball?' project is collecting data among fans and players about how they were introduced to the sport, what the sport means to them and what they like/dislike about basketball. The gathered data will be used to gain additional insight into some of FIBA's key stakeholders.
A book detailing and analysing the results of the survey is also planned.
Basketball fans frequently hear references to AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) summer leagues, in which young players have a chance to hone their games. The AAU leagues are often criticized for exploiting young kids, but most of these charges have been based on rumor or hearsay. Until now.
Dohrmann, the last sportswriter to win a Pulitzer Prize, spent approximately nine years researching this book; the story begins in 2000, when he convinced AAU coach Joe Keller to give him unfettered access to his team, the Inland Stars. The only condition was that the book wouldn't be published until the players—then 9 and 10 years old—were in college.
Keller is a fascinating subject, a mix of positive characteristics—he is a genuinely caring father figure for many of his players—and profoundly negative.

University of Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari shows us an extensive workout we can use with our point guards to develop their skills, featuring Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls point guard, 2008-09 Rookie-of-the-Year and Rod Strickland, former professional point guard (17-year career).
As a point guard, you have to be a scoring threat at all times. Improve your ball quickness and hand-eye coordination, develop a "go to" spot on the court where you know you can get a basket, and learn to play through contact, finish strong and score. In addition, Derrick Rose shares a favorite drill he uses to improve his shooting range.
To be a great point guard, you have to be able to guard the ball. Learn three key areas where you can improve your on-ball defense immediately.

"... People can crunch "advanced basketball statistics" as much as they want but the major difference between the Lakers and the Cavs during the 2010 playoffs is that Kobe Bryant played aggressively and thus maximized potential opportunities for himself and his teammates, while LeBron James literally acted as if he could not wait for the season to be over so he could rip off his Cavaliers' jersey and head for (what he presumes to be) greener pastures.
The phrase "making one's teammates better" is a cliched, imprecise way of saying "Great players create openings and opportunities for their lesser talented teammates to do what they do well" ..."
"... Before you know it the biggest event in world basketball will be thrilling spectators, tv audiences and basketball fans all around the globe.
Every Championship tries to BUILD-UP its COUNT-DOWN. Whether "one year to go", 100 days, three-full moons or the number of hours equal to the sum of the points scored in last edition's final, countdowns are a a feature of the run up to any Championship.
But we are not going to make a big deal about today's date. However, we ARE going to make a big deal about what we can all look forward to between 28th August and 12th September.
So (with one month to go), here are a few things you can look forward to: ..."
Drawing on his background as a competitive Indiana basketball player and an irrepressible love of the game, the author describes experiences in coaching his three daughters grade-school basketball teams in Los Gatos, California.
Coach Charlie unabashedly recounts how he overcomes his Overly Competitive Coaching Disorder (OCCD) to become a better coach and mentor and parent.
Charlie illustrates his learning process with often-hilarious anecdotes of practices, timeouts and motivational speeches. He highlights the importance of positive feedback, recognition and acknowledgement and the challenge of simply getting the girls' attention.

"... Talking about dunks & stats, I value passing as one of the most important skills in basketball. I was wondering, discussing about the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, about any good passing statistics analysis rules based in my last message about the rebounds qualification in disputed, undisputed, by zones, number of players, etc.
For example, is the same a close assist to a dunk than an assist for an open three pointer ? How we can get an idea of how good our players are at passing the ball which leads to a score ? ..."
